1. Why add a shower seat?

A seat makes bathing easier and more controlled for the right user — it is support, not a fall-prevention guarantee.

2. Built-in shower bench

Built as part of the shower — framed and tiled, floating (wall-cantilevered), full-width, or solid-surface — and integrated into the waterproofing system. Advantages: a stable permanent structure, a large seating surface, an integrated look, and storage use when unoccupied. Considerations: it takes floor space, must be waterproofed correctly, sits in a fixed position that’s hard to modify later, and must be positioned relative to controls and support from the start.

3. Fold-down shower seat

A wall-mounted seat that folds up out of the way — the answer for shared showers and smaller footprints. 5. Transfer bench and corner seat

A transfer bench extends across a tub wall or shower threshold: the user sits outside the bathing area first, then moves their legs across the barrier — with sliding and rotating-seat versions available. It needs bathroom space outside the bathing area and can interfere with doors or curtains. Transfer technique is individual; an occupational therapist’s input is valuable when transfers are the core challenge.
